Aircraft Add-On Installation Steps

To install aircraft add-ons for Prepar3D, a number of files must be copied to existing Prepar3D folders. In most cases, it is not appropriate overwrite any files (i.e., if a file with the same name as one being copied already exists in the directory, do not overwrite the existing file with the new one).

Aircraft

Most aircraft add-ons come with the following folders:

  1. An ‘Aircraft_Name’ folder named according to the aircraft’s name (e.g., F-35 Lightning II)
  2. A folder containing Prepar3D Gauge files called, “Gauges”

The Aircraft_Name folder and all of its contents should be copied to the following folder:
C:Program Files (x86)Lockheed MartinPrepar3DSimObjectsAirplanes

Only the contents of the second folder (usually *.cab, *.dll, and/or *.gau files) should be copied to the following folder:
C:Program Files (x86)Lockheed MartinPrepar3DGauges

Some aircraft add-ons include *.fx files (usually located in a folder named “Effects”). For such add-ons, the contents of the “Effects” folder should be copied to the following folder:
C:Program Files (x86)Lockheed MartinPrepar3DEffects

Scenery Add-On Installation Steps

Download Fs2004

There is a great deal of custom scenery available on the Internet, created by third parties. You can use the Scenery Library to find, add, delete, and organize scenery, or to add, delete, or modify the cache of the scenery files that load as you fly between scenery areas.

To access the Scenery Library from inside the simulation:
On the World menu, click Scenery Library

The Scenery.cfg file stores the changes you make to your Scenery Library through the Prepar3D User Interface. You may also manually edit this file using a text editing program such as notepad.exe.

Path to Scenery.cfg on Vista or Windows 7:
C:Users(user name here)AppDataRoamingLockheed MartinPrepar3D

Path to Scenery.cfg on Windows XP:
C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataLockheed MartinPrepar3D

A detailed article about adding scenery is available in the Prepar3D Learning Center under the article titled ‘The Scenery Library’.

Note: The Scenery.cfg file at the root directory where Prepar3D.exe is located should not be edited and that any manual editing of the Scenery.cfg file could result in unwanted scenery configuration errors.

Troubleshooting Add-On Installation

While most add-ons developed for FSX and ESP will install and run without issue, there are certain install packages which are hard-coded to only install into a FSX installation folder dictated by a FSX installation registry key on your computer. There are several tools available online (one by TweakFS titled ‘FSX Registry Utility’) that will allow you to add a FSX registry key to your computer pointing to a location of your choice. You can add a FSX registry key pointed to your Prepar3D installation folder using one of these tools so that the FSX-specific installers will now be able to be installed into your Prepar3D installation folder.

Note: Before installing any add-on it is important to check its legal terms, conditions and license agreement to ensure you can install and run the add-on in the environment and deployment that you are planning to.

Hi,

  • Where did you unzip the files, directly in the Aircrafts folder that is present in Flight Simulator (FS) folder?

If you have directly unziped the aircraft in the flight simulator folder then this is the reason the aircrafts do not show up. Follow the steps mentioned below to install the aircrafts.

Step 1: Understanding How FS recognises add-on aircraft

Aircraft Installer For Fs2004 Download

a. Using Windows Explorer navigate to your FS folder.( The default location is C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesFs2004)
b. Open the folders as illustrated & note the sub folder structure.
c. First you will notice an 'aircraft' folder. This is where all the aircraft are stored. Each aircraft is stored as a separate folder within the 'aircraft' folder & each contain 4 sub folders Model, Panel, Sound & Texture as well as other required files - the aircraft.cfg & air files.

Step 2: Downloading & Unzipping

Note: This instruction does not apply to self extracting files - some add-ons unzip as an 'exe' file - Install these by simply following the on-screen install instructions. If they don't show up then extract them to a temp folder & manually install as below))
It is important to keep your files organised. For this reason it is recommended you do the following:
a. Create a new folder on your computer specifically for dealing with FS downloads. It is generally better to keep these outside your main FS folder to avoid confusion & make clearing unwanted files easier. For example lets call the folder 'FS Downloads' - where we will download & extract zipped files from the internet.
Important: Always Unzip into a Temp Folder - this is always the best way to avoid problems . Do not unzip aircraft directly into the aircraft folder in FS.
b. Click and 'Save' the file to your FS Downloads folder
c. Open the FS Downloads folder on your computer & Right Click the required file. Choose 'Extract to folder (FS Downloads)' You are now choosing to unzip the file into the FS Downloads folder.
For e.g. A-10Thunderboltii.zip, why people often have difficulty installing aircraft. You will note that when extracted there is A-10 folder within the a-10 folder - before we see the model/panel/sound & texture folders. The one you must install is the folder containing the Model/Panel/Sound & Texure folder directly.

Step 3: Installing into FS or CFS

Fs2004 Plane Downloads

a. Using Windows Explorer open in 2 windows each occupying 1/2 of your screen.

c. In the Right window open up FS2004 so you can see the sub folders - see picture below.
d. Drag the folder into the Aircraft folder in FS2004.
